Lambeau Field
Lambeau Field is one of the most historic football stadiums ever. Originally called City Stadium, the
6,000-seat stadium dates back to 1925. Between 1925 and 1957, the City Stadium capacity expanded to nearly 25,000-seats.
Because of poor stadium conditions, other NFL owners threatened to force a move to Milwaukee. As a result of this, on Steptember
29th, 1957, a $1,000,000 renovation expanded capacity to 32,150 seats. The stadium was rededicated as Lambeau Field on September
11th, 1965, following death of Curly Lambeau the previous June.
Between 1961 and 1995, the stadium continually expanded the capacity to nearly 60,000 seats. In 2003, a $295 million construction
project expanded the capacity of the stadium to 72,928 seats and also added two new scoreboards. The interesting part of this renovation
was that it was funded party by the team and party by an increase in sales tax in the Brown County.
The Packers are a unique team in many ways and much of that reflects on Lambeau Field. The team is the only community-owned non-profit
organization in the NFL. Many fans actually own stock in the Green Bay Packers. What also makes Green Bay and Lambeau Field unique is that
it plays host to an NFL team in a city of less than 100,000 people.
Though the Packers have yet to sell the naming rights of Lambeau Field to any corporation, they have sold the naming rights to the five entrance
gates. Miller Brewing owns the rights to the atrium gate, the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin owns the Oneida Nation gate on Oneida Street,
Mills Fleet Farm owns the southwest gate, Associated Bank owns the west gate and private box entrance, and Verizon owns the northwest gate. Miller
Lite is also a large sponsor at Lambeau Field sponsoring the Atrium and a section in the North end-zone called the "Miller Lite End Zone".
Lambeau Field is also well known for its nickname: The Frozen Tundra. This nickname came from the 1967 NFL Championship versus the Dallas Cowboys.
The game was played in sub-zero temperatures and came to be known as the "Ice Bowl".
In 2007, 30-miles of radiant heating pipes were added below the surface of Lambeau to heat the ground. In addition to the new heating system, the
top level 12" of dirt and grass was replaced with root-zone sand and Kentucky bluegrass turf. About 20 million DD GrassMaster synthetic fibers were
stitched into the surface to provide strength and stability to the field.
From the period of when it opened until 2003, the Packers never lost a Post Season game at Lambeau Field. The "Mystique of Lambeau Field" continues
to carry its tradition today, home to the Packers of "Title Town", Green Bay.
